SOMMA LOMBARDO
Around 2500 years ago, the Gauls invaded this area which then became known as Insubria. Subsequently is was called Callia Cisalpina by the romans. Part of the provinces of Varese and Como became Il Seprio and its capital was the Castello Seprio. Somma Lombardo is located 284 meters above sea level and is the highest point on the Sempione Highway which runs from Milan to Domodossola. It is crossed by the Ticino river in two of its townships, Maddalena and Coarezza, and a large part of its territory belongs to Ticino Park. It was on these banks that the Battle of Ticino was fought in 218 a.d. The exact location of the clash between Hannibal and Publio Cornelio Scipione has not been determined. Some academics believe that it happened between Golasecca and Sesona, others say that it was in the lower areas of Somma between Madonna della Preia and San Rocco. TICINO PARK www.vieverditicino.it
Ticino Park was created in 1974 to safeguard the Lombardian environment located along the Ticino River. It extends from Lake Maggiore to the confluence of the River Po, across a total surface of 91,000 hectares and 47 townships in the communities of Varese, Milan and Pavia. Thanks to its patrimony of nature, countryside, art and history, the Ticino park, in 2002, was honored by UNESCO with the title of Biosphere Reserve. There are 780 km of pathways, 122 km of which are bike paths. This presents an excellent opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and discovery the wealth of nature just a short distance from Milan. Itineraries with natural, cultural and historical points of interest, almost all of which are accessible by paved roads, will enable you to discover and enjoy the park.

LAGO MAGGIORE
The last part of the Piemontese branch of Lago Maggiore is located between Belgirate and Castelletto Ticino and is characterized by the presence of different cultural and artistic points of interest. At Belgirate, for example, is the small roman church of Santa Maria: dating from the XII century, the religious building is situated on a rise which makes it tower above the town. At Massino Visconti a 4 km panoramic road ends with a view of the sanctuary of San Salvatore: located on a wooded slope dominated by birch and beech trees. Following state road 33, there are many historic villas surround by gated gardens such as the Villa Correnti, constructed near the end of the XIX century by the senator of the Italian kingdom, Cesare Correnti and the eighth century Villa Faraggiana di Meina , a neoclassical structure surrounded by a large park. Near the end of Lago Maggiore is Arona, seat of the Borromeo family which for centuries has been a stong influence in the lake area. The colossus of San Carlo, an impressive work 23,40 meters high, depicts the cardinal San Carlo Borromeo, and looking out from the eyes of the statue permits a breath-taking view of the Lombardian and Piemontese banks of Lago Maggiore. Finally, at Castelletto Ticino, the last town in the Piemontese branch, one can admire the fort of Castello Torriani-Visconti: erected in medieval times, the castle belonged to the Torriani and Visconti families and maintains to this day its imposing square tower.
